Online Information About Eklingji and Nagda Near Udaipur Eklingji in Udaipur is famous for its 108 temples complex. Built on a shore of a small lake surrounded by hills it is also known as Kailashpuri or the abode of Shiva.
Eklingji temple udaipur was built by Bappa Rawal who is said to have received religious discourses here from a sage called Harita Rishi,on the side of 72 roomed jain temple which had a four faced idol of Adinathji , the first Jain saint. First built in 728AD , the main temple is made in white marble. , the four faced image of Mahadev (an icon of Lord Shiva) made of black marble is worshipped as Eklingji, .The four faces representing Brahma facing west, Vishnu facing north, Maheshwar facing south and 'Surya' (Sun) facing the east. The flat top of the composite idol is covered with a Yantra, a mystic symbolic drawing, standing for the ultimate reality.

How to Reach : state transport buses takes 30 minutes and approx fare of INR 15 per person one way.Private taxi costs around INR 700 per trip to Eklingji from Udaipur.It is advised to hire taxi for full day tour as it s more economical and convinient.

The Eklingji temple complex udaipur has 108 Shiva temples and is enclosed by a wall. The temple occupies an area of about 2500 sq. feet and is about 65 feet in height.Lord Shiva is the family deity of the ruling Mewar dynasty. Even today the maharana of Udaipur visits this marble temple every Monday.

This deity is regarded as the virtual ruler, by the Maharanas of Mewar - who considered themselves to be regents (Dewans) under Eklingj. The temple has a uniquely designed double storeyed porch and an altar all made of white marble. The porch is covered by a flat pyramidal roof and has hundreds of circular knobs while the altar has a lofty towered roof. The interior is breathtaking with an ornamented silver doorway and screen, silver lamps add to the elegance and grandeur of the temple. Made of black marble, the four-faced image of Mahadev (an icon of Lord Shiva) is worshipped as Eklingji or with one lingam.

A small silver Nandi (bull of Lord Shiva) faces the idol of Mahadev. Other Nandi icons are found in the courtyard. Other deities housed in the Eklingji temple complex in udaipur include Parvati, Ganesh, Ganga, Kartikeya , Yamuna and Saraswathi. There are also small temples dedicated to Ambamata, Kalka Mata and Ganesh in the temple complex.

There is another temple called Nathon Ka Mandir in the temple complex with inscriptions dating back to the 10th century CE. No worship is offered here.There are two tanks situated on the Northern side of the temple - Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund. Water from these tanks is utilized for temple services. Temple services are performed in a very elaborate manner in the Vedic and Tantric styles - everyday beginninG at 4 in the morning. Shivratri is an important religious event, when the image of the deity is decked with jewellery. The walls of the temple also act as an information bank on the history of Mewar. The walls have an inscription of a hundred couplets, engraved by Rana Raimal, that gives an insight into the history of the region as well as of the temple.Mention must be made of the Sas-Bahu (sahashra Bahu) marble temple near Udaipur, dating back to the 11th century. It is a fine specimen of ancient art with sculptural details. The Adbhudji Jain temple is of black marble and it dates back to the 15th century CE. Other temples in Kailashpuri udaipur include those of Pataleshwar Mahadeo, Arbada Mata, Rathasan Devi, Vindhyavasini Devi.
